Trout fishing is one of the more fun recreational sports out there, but it can be more fun if you know how to successfully catch these clever fish on a consistent basis. One of the major keys to being a successful angler is having the knowledge of what to put on the end of your line. Yes, it is very important to know about casting and actual trout fishing techniques, but without hooking a trout on your line you will never have to worry about reeling them in anyway. This article discusses why to use lures over bait and highlights three types of trout fishing lures that will increase the number of bites you get, thus allowing you to catch more fish!
One of the major reasons for using artificial lures instead of live bait is to capitalize on the trout's keen sense of sight. Most lures are designed to be very attractive by appearance to the trout, as opposed to natural baits that can attract the trout's sense of smell. Artificial lures can also be a good option for those who want to be more active while trout fishing because there is more technique and strategy involved, and you generally cannot just cast and wait as with bait fishing. This doesn't mean that if you are a beginner you should stick to bait fishing. Trout fishing with lures is not a hard skill to master, and the best place to start is to know which lures to use. Keep in mind that there are tons and tons of lures and tackle combinations out there. Also, the options below are general types of lures; there are hundreds or thousands of specific subtypes within each type. Spoon
A spoon lure is named as such because of its shape. They are typically made of metal and have a concave, spoon-like shape. They are very effective because they reflect light and move randomly as they are dragged through water, simulating the natural prey of trout. Spoon lures also come in a variety of colors and sizes which give trout anglers more options for baiting their fish. If you are fishing in water that contains a large amount of smaller fish like minnows that trout naturally prey on then the spoon is a great option.
Spinner
Spinners are very common and highly effective when fishing for trout because they closely resemble natural small fish. They typically consist of a small piece of metal connected to another piece of metal, which is connected to a hook. The pieces spin as they move through the water, and this movement really gets the attention of the trout. The metal "blade" will spin faster or slower depending on its size and weight, and also on the force from the rod. There are many different techniques that can be used with spinners since they come in many varieties, and this versatility allows them to be very critical for trout fishing success.
Flatfish
Flatfish are very useful when fishing for trout in slower moving waters, such as lakes or eddies. They are different from spoons and spinners in their shape and how they move in the water. Flatfish lures wobble to the side and in a very wide manner in order to attract the attention of bigger trout. They are best paired with some form of weight so they can sink to deeper water where these bigger trout tend to hide. These lures can be very effective if you are trolling in lakes or even for various casting methods in fishing holes.
